BIO
Most people build a career in one lane. Dr. Ugonna Nwigwe built three — and made them work together.
She is a healthcare transformation leader, clinician, and entrepreneur with over 2 decades of experience across Nigeria's public and private health sectors. As Deputy Director and Head of the Regulatory Standards, Governance and Compliance Division at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), she shapes the regulatory frameworks that govern how health insurance operates and how facilities are held accountable across the country. Her work spans policy, accreditation, risk management, and institutional reform — and it reaches millions of Nigerians whose access to quality care depends on a system that functions.
She is also the Founder and Creative Head of The Eye Place Eye Clinic and Optical Boutique in Abuja — a patient-centred eye care brand that blends clinical excellence with the kind of service experience most Nigerian clinics do not offer. Under her leadership, The Eye Place has built corporate vision programmes, community outreach initiatives, and a track record of mentoring early-career optometrists. She built it from the ground up, while working full-time in public service. That discipline is not a footnote. It is the point.
Ugonna holds a Doctor of Optometry, a Master of Science in Health Promotion and Public Health from Brunel University London, and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. She is a Mandela Washington Fellow, a WIMBoard Fellow (WIMBIZ), and a graduate of the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (Fix Politics Africa). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Health System Management. Her executive training spans WHO, the World Bank, LSHTM, the University of Washington, and the Enterprise Development Centre — a curriculum built not for a CV, but for relevance.
She is the author of Vision to Reality: The Ultimate Eye Clinic Success Business Blueprint and The Side Hustle Playbook, and a regular speaker and writer on healthcare leadership, regulation, service innovation, AI in health, and women's professional advancement.
